LEARN ABOUT THE 32 PORTUGUESE HEROES OF THE DISCOVERIES AT THE MONUMENT OF THE DISCOVERIES

Go to the top Viewpoint and enjoy a unique panoramic view of Lisbon

The beautiful Monument of the Discoveries is shaped like a caravel from the Discoveries, heading to sea at the Tagus river. This is a tribute to the heroes of the that era, where Prince Henry takes the lead. It’s definitely worth a visit and, at the top, it has an amazing view over Lisbon.

Prince Henry, the navigator heads this landmark of Lisbon. Erected for the first time for the Portuguese World Exhibition in 1940, the Monument of The Discoveries is a tribute to the heroes of the Discoveries. With 32 figures represented, it includes mostly navigators but also writers such as Luís Vaz de Camões and the prince’s mother Philippa of Lancaster.

Rebuilt in 1960 and reopened for the Celebration of the 500th anniversary of Prince Henry’s death it is a top
attraction in Lisbon.

Visit the Monument of the Discoveries and visit the 56m high viewpoint, preferably on a sky clear day. And if you have the chance, enjoy the sunset over the Tagus estuary. From this top view, you can see the Jeronimos Monastery, the Ajuda Nacional Palace and the Belém Tower in a unique perspective.

Note in detail the extraordinary rose-wind built in the square in front on the monument and offered by the Republic of South Africa in that year.

With temporary exhibitions on their lower floor, check the exhibition of the moment. In 2017, the 3 exhibitions are related to Lisbon being elected as the Cultural Capital of the Ibero-American Universe (see their agenda here).
